How many tennis balls are in this container?
It is a prism which is 7 feet tall, and has a square base, where the sides are two feet tall..
Basically 2ft(61cm)W X 2ft(61cm)D X 7ft(213.4)H
The whole container is 1.3 cm thick and is made entirely of plexi glass.
It is filled to the brim with prince tennis balls.. How many are there in the container? I really appreciate your help.
Fedfan’s answer gives an upper limit. It’s not quite accurate because there are always spaces between the balls and they probably can’t be compressed either .
Tbd = Tennis ball diameter ~ 2.7in = .225ft
Tbv = Tennis ball volume = 4/3πr³ = 4/3π(.225ft/2)³ ~ .005964ft³
Piv = Prism interior volume = l*w*h = 2ft*2ft*7ft = 28ft³
Upper limit = Piv/Tbv = 4694 balls
In actuality look at the # of uncompressed balls that fit edge to edge along a 2ft length
2ft/.225ft = 8.89 so the answer is only 8
So a lower estimate for each 2ft x 2ft x .225ft cross section of the prism might be 8*8 = 64 balls
There are 7ft/.225ft ~ 31 such cross sections.
Lower limit = 64*31 = 1984 balls
The number is somewhere between 2000 and 4000 balls, probably closer to 4000 as a lot of extra balls can be crammed vertically and horizontally into the spaces left between other balls. An exact answer would require me to remember a lot of calculus I’ve forgotten. My educated guess is around 3400 uncompressed balls or so lol.
You could replicate this on about a 5th size model with ping pong balls and count them out if you were really bored
