Open Tennis Bracket
Could you please explain to me this tennis draw?

It’s this year’s Australian Open printable draw:

http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/scores/draws/ms/msdraw.pdf

I don’t understand: what do those numbers in square brackets mean? ( [1], [31] ) Also letters (Q) and (W)? Why are some players’ names written in bold? And do they play like, No. 1 with No. 2, No. 3 with No. 4, and so on (in 1st round)?

Sorry, so many questions, but it’s unclear to me :(
Thank you!

The numbers in the square brackets are the seeds of those players. It means that their world ranking was high enough for them to be seeded at the tournament. The Q stands for players that had to qualify for the tournament. They had to play a week before the Australian in a qualifying tournament in order to make it into the main draw.

The W is for wildcards. These are players who weren’t ranked high enough to enter the tournament on their own merit but the tournament coordinators allowed them entry because of past results or for other reasons.

The way the tournament plays out is that most seeded players will not face each other until later rounds of the tournament. For example, the first and second seed cannot play each other until the final because they are on opposite sides of the bracket.
