Which is better in tennis: a single or two hand back hand?
I don’t have problems getting the ball back over the net (in fact, I think my single hand back hand is too powerful) I’d like to eventually learn to hit with two, but right now, I only do one hand. I am noticing that most people use two hands when they back hand. Why is this? I notice that it looks cooler, but is it just as simple as the fact that two hands are better than one?
I’m average height: 5’6″.
There are fundamental pros and cons to each shot. The strengths of one are the weaknesses of the other (for the most part)
One-handed Backhand:
Longer reach — allows you to reach more shots quicker and decreases the amount of court your opponent has to “hit it out of reach.”
Slice and Volley — both the slice and the volley are more easily approached using a one-handed backhand. When you use a one-handed backhand, its easier to adapt to those shots.
More Power — Using a one-handed turns the torso and the arm in a way to generate more power than a two-handed backhand.
Two-handed Backhand:
More control — using two hands allows you to control the ball more and can be used to put more spin on the ball for different shots.
Easy Execution — the two-handed backhand is simpler to learn, and the form is simpler.
Easy Short-Swing — the two-handed backhand can use a shorter back-swing for a quicker reaction to a shot. This allows a greater amount of control and accuracy of a shot.
