Table Tennis Tips to Help Improve Your Game

So you think you have the basics of table tennis down?  Perhaps you have a good rivalry going with a friend.  Now that the stakes are getting high, you are probably looking for table tennis tips to give you that edge.  There is nothing wrong with studying up and practicing to improve your game.

Hopefully, you have already learned some of the basics, such as finding the right paddle.  Having the proper grip is arguably the most important basic skill to learn, so you may want to look into how to do the handshake grip.  This is the most common way to hold the paddle.  Having the proper grip determines the angle of the racket, and how you hit the ball.

You should also have an idea of the proper stance and of the basic strokes such as the backhand push, the backhand drive, the forehand push and others.  If you are unfamiliar with these terms, research them online or look for ping-pong books and DVDs.

The next tip after acquiring a basic understanding of stances and strokes is to practice your techniques.  Practice, practice, and when you are done practicing, practice some more!  Even someone who is considered a “natural” at ping-pong can benefit from consistent practice.  Young champion Michael Landers says that he practices three hours a day six days a week!

Now we’re getting into the good stuff.  Remember to mix up the ways you serve.  If you serve the same way every time, your opponent will become used to your opening moves.  You want to keep your opponent on his/her toes at all times!  This includes the opening serve.  A serve to your opponent’s elbow tends to be a good trick, as they must quickly determine if they are going to hit backhand or forehand, and they usually do not have enough time to decide.  Your point!

Other good table tennis tips include warming up your mind beforehand with meditation, and keeping your temper in check.  Getting heated and upset will only cause you to make further mistakes.  Take a second to take a deep breath, stay cool, and plan your next move.  Another good tip is to keep your eyes on your opponent’s racket when they are serving.  If you allow your eyes to stay on the tossed ball, you will miss the angle of their racquet, which will help in telling you where that ball is going to go.

There are a lot of good table tennis tips out there and now you have an idea of some of the basics.  Keep up the good work and you will be a pro in no time!
