Tennis Beginner Forehand
my wrist hurts so badly because of tennis. what do i do?? :( ?

hi!
my wrist really hurts sooooo bad . :( it wasnt this bad yesterday. ive been playing for 2 weeks straight and im a beginner. my coach says its bcause im not hitting the ball the right way.

what should i do with my wrist? my forehand and backhand lately is a total failure cause i dont have enough strength anymore because of my wrist. should i get a wrist band or something? i r d k

and how should i do the forehand correctly? i really have a hard time in doing it. my backhand is better than my forehand though.

thanks!

While the racket bracket is a useful tool for learning how proper form feels, it is not a medical brace to be worn when in pain, and would limit other functionality outside of tennis.

Either just wrap it up with an ACE bandage, or get a real wrist brace. It’s probably best for you to see your doctor, as he/she can point you toward what will work the best for your situation.

But I can tell you what you are (most likely) doing wrong. You’re probably using your wrist way too much while you swing. It’s a very common mistake. Some people do it to add power, others try to use it to impart spin on the ball. Either way, this is BAD. You should always have a firm wrist when playing. The only stroke where you can snap your wrist is on your serve/overhead. Groundstrokes and volleys should not involve any sort of wrist movement whatsoever.

Have your coach show you the correct way to swing. This is really the only way you’ll learn. Private lessons are great for this. If you started taking some now, the first thing they would probably fix would be the wrist movement. The sooner you learn the proper technique, the sooner you can improve, and the sooner your wrist will feel better.

You might want to take it easy the next few days, though. A little rest will go a long way to helping your wrist.
