Tennis Racquets. A present day marvel

As we all know, tennis racquets are essential to a tennis game. Second only to the ball.

Earth shattering revelation I realize, but an crucial point to make!

In the older times, where tennis used to be much more about the finesse of the individual than the engineering associated with the gear the person wielded, tennis racquets had been made out of wood.

Nowadays they are created nearly completely out of composite materials such as Carbon Fibre, Fiberglass or Graphite. Various organizations have gone a step further, but more about that later.

Head size is the single most critical attribute to contemplate in a racquet, and is basically how large the hitting region.

All the tennis racquets possess a sweet spot in which the strings deliver the most power for the minimum degree of effort. This is really a tennis player’s favored region of a racquet, and it is larger on racquets with bigger heads. Thus, larger racquet heads generally have larger sweet spots, giving you much more power – but at the expense of control.

The power racquets are ideal for novices because they typically play with shorter and lighter strokes, allowing the racquet to do all of the challenging work. Poor things!

Even so, if you are an amateur with a lot of energy and power (otherwise referred to as “Ripped!”), you might prefer to consider giving the larger head racquets a miss, and start using a medium sized head targeted far more toward controlling your shot.

The GT frame, exclusive to the Babolat tennis racquets like the Babolat Aeropro Drive Plus, is a braided graphite/tungsten hybrid material that reinforces the framework at key points to minimize torque and boost accuracy. This reinforcement material firms the racquet whilst not adding weight to the framework. It’s a unique system that can help to eradicate one of the most significant problems discussed – the loss of precision that goes with the greater power.

Heck! This is what Nadal has!

With all that said however, the string pattern of your racquet also plays a very big factor in the power vs control argument.

The string pattern of your racquet is calculated by way of the amount of vertical and horizontal strings. Open string patterns have less strings, with 16 x 19 being a widespread pattern. This gives you much more control because the tennis ball embeds itself within the strings.

Closed patterns have far more strings and provide greater power by driving the ball away from the racquet.

It’s sufficient to give you a headache thinking about it all!

Fortunately though, the main tennis racquet businesses have already been working very hard to try and make things less complicated for everybody.

The Babolat Aeropro Drive Plus for example, employs something called…wait for it.. WOOFER Technology!

Now just before you start barking up the wrong tree (hey, MY article, MY poor humour!), let me describe what this means.

Actually no. Their particular marketing blurb details it far better than I possibly could;

“Woofer is the first dynamic technology which makes the frame as well as the strings interact when striking the ball. Woofer delivers 10% extra power than conventional racquets, and ensures that the strings retain their energy longer. It enlarges the sweetspot area for every racquet size. This technology enables 25% more contact between the ball and the strings for optimal control, feel and increased spin.”

So there you have it. Modern technology at its very best. In a tennis racquet. Makes you want to get one just to hang it on your wall!
