Tennis News Today
Discrimination in tennis today. A FACT!!!?

Recently, the French Open, one of the four grand slams of the year decided to pay women the same as men, which is good news, too bad it took them so long. The problems now are the other events that still discriminate on women and do not pay them the same as men. A perfect example is the Pacific life Open, the male winner receives 500,000 while the female winner receives 306,800!!! Is this outragious or what? Some used to argue that the reason, is because males play more sets (best of 5 in grand slams), but at the Pacific Life Open, both males and females played best of 3. The next event, the Sony Ericsson, is paying both males and females the same. Why do some events, like the Pacific Life Open continue to discriminate?

You have to look at the other end of the spectrum (income generated). Men typically have generated more viewers over the course of the tournaments. More viewers tend to generate more revenues. This means that during a tournament the men’s draws tend to make more money for the sponsors and tournament leadership. This is partly because of the length of the matches played, but more for the fact that more people in the past have watched Men’s tennis over Ladies. That gap has been growing smaller every year for the past 10 to twelve years.
It isn’t about “equality” in the prize money, but more, “how much money will the players generate for us?”

This also holds true for doubles. You won’t see many doubles teams making the money that a singles player makes because they don’t generate the income.
