Tennis Passing Shot

Any tips on approach shots in tennis?
I never do well on short balls. I end up losing by a lob or easy passing shot. Can anyone help me on my problem?
If you are not a serve and volleyer or an all-around player who is a natural volleyer, you should only be coming to net intentionally off of a powerful drive (where your opponent will be stretched out) or when they force you into the net by hitting the ball short.
If they hit a short ball, the best thing to do is to either slice it low and deep in the court or counter with a dropshot. This is particularly effective if your opponent doesn’t close in to the net right away. If they do rush the net after they hit the short shot, then the best thing to do is hit a hard flat shot directly at them (if you can get to the ball in time) which will force an error, or hit a defensive lob and hope it goes in (if you can’t get to it in time to do more).
If you try to hit a basic topspin shot without a lot of heat on it or a “high slice” on a short ball, it will leave you open for a passing shot or a lob since you are close to the net and your ball will just sit up for the opponent.
