How did the strange points system in tennis arise?
How did the points system 15, 30, 40 in tennis arise, and why the term “love” for zero?
The 4 points in each game were meant to represent the 4 quarters of an hour (on a clockface). 15, 30, 45, 00. Instead of saying “45″ people just started to say “40″ because it’s easier and the last point wins the game so they just say “game”.

The running score in each game is described in a manner peculiar to tennis. Scores of zero to three points are described as “love” (or “zero”), “fifteen”, “thirty”, and “forty”, respectively. The origins of the fifteen, thirty, and forty scores are believed to be medieval French. It is possible that a clock face was used on court, with a quarter move of the hand to indicate a score of fifteen, thirty, and forty-five. When the hand moved to sixty, the game was over. However, it was realized that the game could then be won by luck, and so the idea of “”deuce”" was introduced. In order to make the score still within the “”sixty”" ticks on the clock face, the forty-five was changed to forty. Therefore, if both players have forty, the first player to score receives ten and that moves the clock to fifty. If the player scores a second time before the opponent is able to score, they are awarded another ten and the clock moves to sixty. The sixty signifies the end of the game. However, if a player fails to score twice in a row, then the clock would move back to forty to establish another “”deuce”"
The origin of the use of “love” for zero is also disputed; it is possible that it derives from the French word for the egg (l’œuf) because an egg looks like the number zero. “Love” is also said to derive from “l’heure” or “the hour” (more likely to be translated as “the time”) in French. Another possibility of the origin comes from the Dutch “iets voor lof doen,” which means to do something for nothing. The word ‘lof’ (nothing) has changed over time to ‘love’
