How do you “defend” Tennis Ranking Points?

I am trying to understand the how the rankings work for the wta and atp. I understand how players earn points but i dont understand how players lose points. How is it determined how many points you lose? Can someone please explain how points are “defended”?
im trying to figure out how they determine the amount of points you lose. Is it the difference in the points you got last year and the points you get this year?
