Is Tennis About sporting excellence or glamour and on court drama?
To often these days I hear a lot of mumbling about how boring Roger Federer’s dominance is. How he is causing viewers to turn off their TV sets… this has never been the case with me… Is this mumbling- no offense- a purely American phenomenon, or do viewers across the globe genuinely feel that a battle between mediocre players, the scandalous nature of ever changing fashion in womens tennis and louder and obnoxious players are better for ratings than one virtuoso plying his trade? How can genius ever be monotonous? I remember that Golf, F1 and basketball became most popular only after the arrival of Tiger, Schumi & Jordan respectively… so why all this negativity about Federer’s dominance?
It’s monotonous in that there’s never any doubt as to the result of matches. It’s just silly sometimes. I would rather see a comepetitive match than a blowout anyday. And nobody wants to watch mediocre players, but the ATP doesn’t have and mediocre players. That’s what makes them tennis professionals. I’d rather see Nadal vs. Blake or Roddick vs. Safin a dozen times before I see Federer embarrass Hewitt for the 20th time.
And it’s not even that people want to see other players, it’s that people want to see Federer lose. When Safin raised his game to beat Federer at the Aus Open 2 years ago and Nalbandian beat him at the 2005 Masters finals, those were the single (double?) most exciting matches I’ve seen this decade. That’s what people want to see. And I should add that Federer doesn’t have to be mediocre to lose. I’d just find tennis more interesting when more people step up like Nadal and Murray (and ONLY Nadal and Murray recently) and start beating this guy.
