Tennis Swing Technique
can u guys tell me some techniques to improve my tennis skills, like in serving, swinging, n everything?
On your forehand, you want to make sure your racket is facing slightly down, but is at eye level. As your shoulder is turning, start piveting your opposite foot. Then, when you hit contact point, keep your racket level or slightly down, depending on what type of spin you want, and rotate your hips through the shot. Always remember to follow through so that you can kiss your bicep. Watch the pros on tv. Rotating your hips through the shot is one of the most important parts about almost any shot. I would recomend doing crunches, to tone abs, but I wouldn’t recomend getting like a twelve pack, because then you can’t really rotate your hips:) For your backhand, same thing, if it’s a two-hander. I wouldn’t try the one-hander if you’re a beginner. For your volleys, use the grip you would for your serve. If you’re at the net, then do a shoulder turn, step with your opposite foot, and block/punch. You don’t need to swing, because if your opponent returns it straight at you, you won’t be ready. If it is a high volley, the do a shoulder turn, and step and punch at the same time. That way, you get more power and you save yourself time. When you hit a half-volley, make sure your knees are really bent, so you can get to the ball. You don’t necessarily need to step, just keep moving forward. When hitting an approach shot, pretend like you’re sitting in a chair, and swing like windshield wipers would. Your follow through will end up closer to your opposite elbow than over your shoulder. For your serve, hold the racket very loose. Hold the ball in your fingerpads and have your pinky touch the racket. Hold the racket like you would be shaking its hand(le). Toss the ball (and I would practice tossing and catching the ball with your racket hand, so you gain absolute control over your toss) and bring the racket back so it’s like you’re scratching your back and right at hangpoint (the point when the ball hangs and is about to fall) make contact and your follow through should end up past your left leg (if you’re a rightie). The toss is about 90% of your serve. The serve is the hardest shot to make in tennis, so I would actually get a lesson or two solely on serves so you get professional advice. If you don’t want to get lessons, then try some online videos and watch the pros on tv. The serve is all about harmony. Everything from your toss to the way you hit and move your racket shouldn’t be jerky; it should all flow. If you are smaller, then use your legs more. Even try to jump into it. Basically as you are cocking your racket back, bring your back leg up to your front foot, and bend your knees. Then make contact as you jump and your arm is at full extension and land with either your back foot or your front foot with your back leg bent but you’re still balanced. I prefer landing with the front foot. If you choose this, then practice landing, because if you serve, you don’t want to be off balance, or worse, fall over, because then your opponent would have advantage over that point. If you want to practice your footwork then I would do some suicides. I know that sounds bad, but they keep you fit, and tennis is all about being fit, right? So go to one corner of the court, and face the net. Go up the double’s sideline, touch the net. Then shufle back, and move to the side. Go back up the single’s sidelines and huffle back. Move from side to side at the service line, and just keep shuffling up and down. For another one, stand so that most of the lines are horizontal. Touch the first line, touch the second like and then go back to the first line. Then go the third, back to the first, go to the fourth, back to the first, etc. Have someone time you, and try to make your personal best. This suicide really helps you sprint to say drop shots, without loosing control. Your overheads, are just like your serves. If you aren’t confident about your overheads, let it bounce once if it’s really high. Or, you can just learn how to hit a normal groundstroke or approach shot from the bounce. This is basically it, but remember to make sure your grip is pretty loose and most of your power comes through the hips and most importantly, to follow through, no matter what. Always play with people that are better than you, because then you learn how to step up to the game and you learn how to hit harder shots. With a little bit of practice, and some observations like on tv and the internet, you will definitely become a better player! Hope this helps and good luck!
