Tennis Umpires Australia
Why oh why did federer win this point?

During the match between Federer and del Potro, Roger hit and returned the ball using his head like a header in soccer.. yet he won the point???

The umpire didn’t seem to care and so did del Potro, am I missing something here?

Did they just change the rules in tennis?

It seems like we have a new rule in tennis…

Rule no.2009 from Australia:
If a player is giving his opponent a drubbing, he can use his head instead of the racket to win points…

tennis experts… explain
The play was over when he did that??

Are you sure? Check the video again… the ball wasn’t called out before Federer did that header… the ball was still in play
What?? It was out?? there was no call??

AND….

if it was indeed out then it would have been del potros point but it was federer’s point…

I have nothing against federer but i think there is some special treatment going on…

I didn’t watch that match. If a ball touches the receiver’s body, it’s considered to be a point for the opponent of the receiver. I doubt if any player on tour doesn’t know it. Seeing that, I don’t think Federer would use his head to hit the ball. There are several possibilities here:
1) You might not have accurately following the match/clearly seen what is going on throughout the point that made u say this
2) By the time Federer hit the ball with his head, Federer was sure that the point was already his – the ball might have bounced on court more than one time before Del Potro reached and hit the lob – that he played around with it, having know that he didn’t have to return the ball as it’s already his point
3) It may be an accident that the lob fell on Federer’s head. But this is a ridiculous speculation to me because no player would let the lob land on his head to give free point to his opponent (so I rule out this possibility)
Since I don’t think u will make error/see the action wrongly, saying that u see Federer used his head to hit the ball, so I guess my no.1 speculation is the situation that has happened to you. And the no.2 speculation is what was going on in that point. You might not have watched the whole process when the point was played.
If you have video-recorded the match, you may play it back to see..

~this question has been asked, and I just re-post the answer I’ve answered, since I think that this applies to your situation. Btw, I’ve confirmed with others who watched it, they agreed that the point was already over and won by Federer before he used his head to hit the ball. Plus, I don’t know why, sometimes, when the ball is out, it will not be called as the umpire will see it or it could be that it’s obviously out/both players know it that it’s needless to call it out~
