Tennis Volley Definition
What is the definition of a big Serve, is mine one?
I am currently on the high school tennis team. In a normal match where it is 1st to six games, i get between 4-6 aces often down the line but 2-3 ft close to the returner. I was wondering what the definiton of a big serve is. is it the amount of aces, the speed which i get complimented on, placement or all three. if so, should i serve and volley more, i also am only 5ft 4
I would define a ‘big serve’ simply as a serve that puts the returner out of position. This can be done purely with speed, but is often a combination of decent pace, placement, and serve selection. Kick serves can even be big serves if they are placed well and have enough kick to force an awkward shot from the returner. Number of aces doesn’t really in itself show that you have a big serve. Big serves will often result in either unreturned serves or botched returns leading to an easy point in the next shot or two. I wouldn’t really say that I had a particularly big serve in high school, but I had a fairly high number of aces. My serve was always a fairly low, skidding serve, and it seemed to throw people off a lot.
As for s&v, you have to be very confident in your net game for it to work. Especially with your height. You’d be fairly easy to lob over, though I imagine that you’re probably pretty quick. Placement and serve variation is key in s&v. The minute your opponent can either tee off on a misplaced serve or if your opponent can start to predict your serves, you’ll get destroyed every time you go to the net. Also, you don’t want to s&v every single point. Keep your opponent guessing whether or not you’re going to move up there. The less predictable you are with everything, the greater your advantage. And this goes for any style of tennis, not just s&v.
