Tennis Women's Rankings
Six of the top 10 tennis women have been eliminated? What’s wrong?

The younger guys (Murray, Nadal, et al.) have been going after Federer. They were looking for blood, they wanted to win, and they got it. Now, Federer is beatable.

Why is this not happening on the women’s side?

Safina had not one, but three chances to be number one and even win the Australian Open, but blew it. Safina’s loss to Williams was the worst since 1962!!

Today, Dementieva had 46 unforced errors. Yes, that’s right 46.
Ana won the French and then that was it. JJ was number one yet hasn’t won any of the majors.
This is bizarre.

Remember, Serena and Venus are not 23 anymore. The wear and tear on the knees, the back, the shoulders. Further, Serena has had two knee surgeries.

Anyone over 30 would love to be in their 20s again, but in tennis – 27 years old – is old age.

Forget about what’s on paper with the rankings.
Why are the younger women not stepping up and beating Serena and Venus?

The problem is that the current crop of up and comers are just not good enough.
Jankovic is a good mover and retrieves well but doesn’t have much firepower.
Dementieva has a great all-round game but she needs a better serve.
Ana Ivanovic has some great shots but recently they’ve all been riddled with glitches.
Safina has a sound game but often plays too impatiently.
Kuznetsova has power but no consistency. I don’t see her adding to her 2004 US Open any time soon.
In addition to this, none of them really seem to have a champion’s mentality. If you look at the greats like Graf, Navratilova, the Williams sisters, Henin, Seles, they not only had the game but they are/were so mentally tough and intense as well.
Right now, the only top names you can rely on are Serena and Venus but they won’t be around forever. Even Clijsters. As good as it is that she’s returning and hopefully she’ll do well, at 25 she’s not exactly a young gun.
The WTA is just basically in the bad position where all of it’s star power lies with a small number of veteran players.
Maybe a new star will emerge and shake things up (like Federer did in 03 after the ATP endured a brief stagnant spell of its own) but things don’t look good right now.
